IDP Workshop - Exploring Your Career Options Beyond Academia

Data has shown that PhD-level trainees who create and follow a written plan are more likely to reach their research and career goals. But how do you create such a plan? How do you even decide which career path to plan for? If you'd like to see a list of these career options, while learning about how to select the best option for you, then don't miss this hands-on, thought-provoking and interactive workshop! Here you will assess your skills, interests and values, and then begin to create your own Individual Development Plan (IDP), a logical, step-by-step process for exploring your career options, deciding which option will provide the best fit for you, and setting out a concrete action plan for finishing your training and achieving your desired next career step. In this interactive workshop, you will learn how to answer two important questions. What career path should I pursue after my training? What steps can I take during the next year to move closer to that goal? We will use the myIDP career development tool, hosted by AAAS/Science, to help you develop a step-wise and structured search for answers to those questions.

Speaker Bio:
Bill Lindstaedt serves as the Assistant Vice Chancellor for Career Advancement, International and Postdoctoral Services at the University of California, San Francisco. He is a career counselor and university administrator who has been working with scientists and engineers for more than 25 years and has helped guide thousands of STEM PhD's into their post-training careers. In his one-on-one career advising practice, he has developed particular expertise in helping PhD-level scientists transition into industry careers.
